In this work shop, geared towards working dog handlers or medical staff working in conjunction with dog handlers, topics such as environmental emergencies, surgical emergencies, care under fire/or unsafe conditions, massive hemorrhage control, airway control, chest trauma management and CPR will be discussed. Restraint, vital signs, medical assessments and field sedation will also be discussed.
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify canine vital signs, recognize abnormalities and their significance
- Comfortably and safely restrain and work around a canine patient
- Recognize the signs, preventions and interventions for environmental emergencies, toxins, gastrointestinal emergencies, respiratory emergencies and minor and major traumas
- Compile and use a canine medical kit and understand how to prepare a pre mission canine medical plan
- Recognize how field sedation can be implemented including the legal considerations
