Submit your speaker/topic ideas to be featured in the new CAWM Special Seminar Series! A webinar all about recent wilderness medicine events! Each webinar will feature a speaker/presentation regarding recent events in wilderness medicine.

If you, or someone you know has a topic in mind, please submit it below. CAWM will go through each suggestion, and reach out to the speaker if we are interested in having you! The webinar will be a live session on our website, and will include a 1 hr presentation with a 15 minute question period from listeners.

Episode 4 - Fallen Climber on the East Lion - Rescuer Safety and Patient Care

When: Wednesday January 15, 2025 @ 1800 MST
Speaker: Dr. Alec Ritchie and Scott Campbell

North Shore Rescue, Canada’s busiest Search and Rescue Team, deploys members of its novel Advanced Medical Provider program for serious medical rescue calls. After a brief description of NSR and its AMP Program, a recent challenging technical call on the ‘East Lion’ will be discussed, focussing on the interplay between rescuer safety and patient care.

Alec Ritchie is an emergency physician, clinical professor of emergency medicine, and prehospital medical consultant. Scott Campbell is a rope rescue technician and a helicopter hoist operator. Both Alec and Scott are members of NSR, and are very experienced in medical rescue.

Episode 3 - Space Medicine

Medical Dr. Shawna Pandya is a newly named astronaut with the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences (IIAS) and Director of IIAS’ Space Medicine Group. She is a two-time aquanaut with the NEPTUNE and NEP2NE missions, and was a scientific lead on the first IIAS suborbital research flight. In 2024, she was inducted as a full member of the International Astronautical Federation’s Human Spaceflight Committee, became an aeromedical flight physician, and named a Karman Pioneer. Dr. Pandya also received the Explorers' Club's 2022 “50 Explorers Changing the World." Her work has been profiled by Nature Careers and the Royal Canadian Mint.

Episode 2 - An overview of the cave rescue specialty in Canada and medical considerations for these austere environments

Christian Stenner is a member of the Alberta/BC Cave Rescue Service and has been the President and Alberta Provincial Coordinator for the organisation for the past 9 years. He serves on the editorial review committee for the American Caving Accidents publication of the US National Speleological Society and is a director in Search and Rescue Alberta.

Stenner has participated in speleological expeditions across Canada, the USA and in Central America over the past 18 years. Christian holds a Master of Science in Organizational Resilience and has been a corporate security and crisis management professional for 23 years.

Episode 1 - Medical Mobilization for the Titan Submersible

Dr Ian Kirby is a Canadian Forces Family Physician trained in military Dive and Aerospace Medicine who also completed a Fellowship in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine at the University California San Diego. He is the medical advisor for the Canadian Forces Submarine Formation and for the Simon Fraser University Hyperbaric Unit. Dr Kirby is the Secretary for the NATO Submarine Escape and Rescue Working Group, Course Director for Canadian Forces Submarine Medicine and Medical Expert for NATO Coordinator Rescue Forces course. In 2023, he was called upon to guide the Medical Mobilization for the TITAN Submersible response.
