Executive Team

The Executive Committee is elected by the Board of Directors. Each member of the Executive serves as an Officer of the Association (President, Secretary, Treasurer). The Executive takes on additional responsibilities for the administration of the Association on behalf of the Board. Individuals are elected onto the Executive Committee for one year terms, and they may serve multiple consecutive terms. Serving on the Executive Committee is a volunteer position.

Alana Hawley

President - MD, FRCPC-EM, DiMM, FAWM

The President acts as the Chair of Board and Executive meetings, and is responsible for the creation of each meetings’ agendas. She is also responsible to ensure the good cohesion and functioning between the various committees and oversees their various projects. 

Specific responsibilities of this position include:

  • Chairs Exec meetings
  • Chairs General Meetings of the Membership
  • Represents CAWM to external individuals and organization

Craig McArthur

Vice President - ACP, DiMM

Craig was a little late to the party with EMS being his third attempt at a career. After completing early EMS training in Calgary, he worked for several years in safety and industrial settings before moving to Inuvik, NWT to work on North America’s northern most EMS service for a couple of years. Returning to Edmonton for ACP training saw him sent to Banff EMS as a student. Recognizing a good thing when it comes along, he later joined their team and has been there for the last 14 years. Enrollment in the Diploma in Mountain Medicine program with the WMS has brought him to a number of WMS conferences, and he was involved with their efforts to build a local hospital in a remote village in Nepal. He tells people that he is a good skier, and resides in Banff, AB where he continues spinning that yarn.

Specific responsibilities of this position include:

  • Supports the president in decision making
  • Chairs board of directors meetings in the president's absence
  • Assists the president with day to day administrative tasks
  • Mentors new executives and board members

Paula Slaney

Treasurer - MD, CCFP, FAWM

The Treasurer is responsible for all the financial aspects of the organization. As such, this person will generate the annual budget, ensure financial records are maintained, hire and work with the CAWM accountant and ensure tax fillings are made accurately and on time. In addition, the Treasurer is responsible for our Social Media accounts (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram). 

Specific responsibilities of this position include:

  • Generates annual budget
  • Responsible for ensuring financial records are maintained
  • Hires and works with the CAWM accountant
  • Responsible for ensuring tax fillings are made accurately and on time
  • Manages our Social Media accounts (FB, Twitter, Instagram)
  • Chairs the Finance and Audit Committee

Svea Brousseau

Secretary - RN, BSN

The Secretary is responsible for the writing of the Board and Executive meetings’ minutes. In addition, the Secretary is responsible to send out quarterly CAWM newsletters, in addition to other CAWM communications when necessary. This person is also responsible for the maintenance of an updated and current list of active CAWM individual and professional members. Finally, the Secretary is responsible for the monitoring of the membership email account. 

Specific responsibilities of this position include:

  • Maintains a current list of active CAWM members
  • Maintains a current list of CAWM Professional Members
  • Produces the quarterly CAWM newsletter and some for additional news posts throughout the year
  • Is responsible for setting dates for the Board meetings, and maintaining meeting minutes of those encounters
  • Monitors the membership, website and contact@cawm.ca emails
  • Is responsible for the ongoing maintenance, monitoring and translation of the website
