Access recordings from our various webinars such as the So You Wanna Be A? or Special Seminar Series. We have also featured the CAWM2024 and CAWM2025 winning student lectures. CAWM members receive access to over 50 additional conference recordings as well as all webinars.

Each episode of SYWBA features a speaker from a different career in wilderness medicine. Paramedics, SARtechs, physicians, nurses, mountain guides, and more! The first two episodes are free for all to attend, future episodes are only accessible to CAWM members.

SYWBA Wilderness Paramedic
Mackenzie WardleBanff EMS Paramedic, STARS Air Ambulance Aeromedical Crew, Ski Patroller, and Wilderness Medicine enthusiast. Mackenzie has a passion for the link between rescue, and prehospital medicine. As a Paramedic with Banff Emergency Medical Services, he has developed a strong integration with Parks Canada Visitor Safety department, aiding in the medical treatment within rescue operations. Mackenzie works as a Critical Care Paramedic across the prairies, where he continues to learn a great deal about prehospital and austere patient care. As a founding member of CAWM Mackenzie is passionate about wilderness medicine. He is an avid skier, mountain biker, hiker, and excessively mediocre xc skier.

SYWBA Mountain Medicine Physician
Carolyn-Kelly Smith MD, FRCPC, ICAR, DMMCarolyn is an FRCPC trained in Emergency Medicine. She works as a Emergency Physician and Trauma Team Leader at Royal Columbian Hospital. Growing up in Squamish BC led to an early love of wilderness and mountain activities. During her residency she sought out subspecialty training in wilderness and mountain medicine and completed the IKAR Diploma in Mountain Medicine in Europe. She has since helped found the Canadian Society of Mountain Medicine and was a course director for the Canadian version of the DiMM. She combines her interest in the outdoors with emergency medicine by working as a physician for Whistler Blackcomb ski patrol, North Shore Search and Rescue and Mike Weigele’s Heliskiing. She has also spent time volunteering as a physician for the Himalaya Rescue Association in Nepal and on Kilimanjaro with a previous helicopter rescue service.

A webinar series all about recent wilderness medicine events! Each webinar will feature a speaker/presentation regarding recent events in wilderness medicine. Each webinar is a live session on our website, and includes a 1 hr presentation with a 15 minute question period from listeners.

ICAR Rescue at Very High Altitude Project
Dr. Kyle McLaughlinDr. Kyle McLaughlin is an Emergency Medicine Physician in Canmore, Alberta in the heart of the Canadian Rockies and clinical lecturer at the University of Calgary Cummings School of Medicine. He is a medical consultant for Parks Canada Mountain Rescue including all high altitude rescues on Canada’s highest peak, Mt Logan. Medical consultant for Canadian Mountain Holiday (CMH) Heli ski and has worked with Avalanche Canada and the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG). Kyle is a member of the International Commission for Alpine Rescue (ICAR) medical commission, Sunshine Village ski patrol physician, and faculty member of the Canadian Society for Mountain Medicine for their Diploma in Mountain Medicine course. A frequent lecturer internationally on all topics in wilderness and austere medicine who has published widely on his main interests of avalanche, high altitude, rescue, and mountain medicine. As the lead author for the ICAR Rescue at Very High Altitude Project, Dr. McLaughlin will provide an overview of the project and highlight some of the key recommendations from the first 2 publications: 1. Pharmacological Prophylaxis and Supplemental Oxygen for Rapid Ascent Rescue to Very High Altitude 2. Helicopter Rescue at Very High Altitude
