Description:
Medical practice prides itself in three distinct ways: delivery to definitive care (the golden hour), “if at first do no harm”, and the standard of care. In function, medicine exemplifies itself much more like an experiment of attempts to meet those goals, than actually attaining them. The reasons for that is somewhat out of our control, but not exclusively. I’d like to offer a comparison from a few case studies (actual and fictional) where patient outcomes could be altered if a pragmatic approach is explored in how we conduct medicine in austerity.
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Understand the current national model and mandates of Search and Rescue in Canada.
- Compare Search and Rescue performance, from an economical and patient care perspective globally, and observe wilderness medicine as a function of our healthcare system.
- Understand and quantify trends in Search and Rescue outcomes
- Understand the benefits and implications of “hybridizing” Search and Rescue using known and well tested, performance based global models.
