Ruth currently works in the Academic Department of Military General Practice undertaking research and delivering education. Alongside this role Ruth is the lead for the Defence GP Women’s Health Special Interest Group, clinical advisor to the MOD menopause network and works with the Navy Servicewomen’s Network. Never one to miss an opportunity to fit the word vulva into a conversations, Ruth’s passion is reducing stigma, improving access to and education around all aspects of women’s health within and outside of the military.
A back-to-basics session on menstruation in adverse environments. Drawing on lessons learned by serving women in austere environments from evacuation ops in Africa “no access to showers of any way to wash other than baby wipes, either tampons or medication were the best options” to cold weather training in Norway “I took femifresh wipes which froze”; demonstrating that there is no one approach to suit all “each lady finds different products more suitable…what operational environment I was entering to aid my selection”. A recap of the menstrual cycle, how impact of pathology, medications, and variations of normal on different parts of the cycle can lead to symptoms affecting care on the ground and how prior planning and education of both women and the wider team can mitigate some of these issues. Leave stigma and taboo at the door, we are talking real life management of menstruation in the field.
