Description:
The CAWM Wilderness Medicine Race is a team trail race traveled on foot. Teams of 3-4 will begin at the trailhead and encounter various wilderness medicine scenarios, challenges, and questions along the course of the race.
Teams should be prepared to handle scenarios of (but not limited to) the following:
- Musculoskeletal Injury Management
- Strains/sprains, dislocations, fractures
- Soft tissue wound management
- lacerations, burns, animal bites, frostbite, etc.
- Exposure injuries
- Hypothermia, dehydration, water contamination, altitude, etc.
- Systemic injuries & condition management
- Shock, fluid loss, existing medical conditions
- Basic SAR, ethical/legal issues in wilderness medicine, scene assessment, etc.
The first team to complete the race and collect the highest number of points will be the winner!
Learning Objectives
- Recognize common wilderness medical problems, conditions, and situations.
- Understand the importance of proper preparation, planning, and gear in the prevention and management of wilderness medical situations.
- Appreciate the importance of teamwork in the success of wilderness medicine and wilderness activities in general
