Description: Participants will take a hands-on approach to setting up suitable shelters for emergency or medical situations using multiple resources such as tarps, rain ponchos and natural debris and vegetation. They will learn the principles of building and sustaining successful fires with items often carried in medical kits, as well as additional kit that can be included in their medical bags. We will walk about the area to identify resources and complete multiple survival tasks focusing on
shelter, fire and water treatment.

Learning Objectives

  1. Select suitable sites to construct tarp or debris shelters for extended field care or emergency situations
  2. Be proficient in tying knots to construct an emergency shelter with multiple configurations
  3. Identify resources and properly construct a fire lay capable of igniting in all weather conditions
  4. Be proficient in lighting and sustaining a fire using multiple methods and resources
  5. Obtain a greater perspective that can benefit and support medical emergencies in austere environments
