Description: Advanced Wilderness Life Support™ is a 16 hour (2 day) certification course intended exclusively for medical professionals. The course curriculum attempts to strike a balance between didactic lectures and hands-on instruction to most effectively train students in managing medical situations in the remote context. Course topics include professional wilderness management of hypothermia and cold injury, avalanche, altitude related problems, patient packaging & evacuation, medical problems, submersion injuries, lightning strikes, wound and musculoskeletal injury, wilderness medical kits, as well as sessions on basic survival and search and rescue fundamentals.

In wilderness and remote environments, the effectiveness of first aid interventions often depends on the quality and appropriateness of the supplies carried. This hands-on workshop, Build Your Evidence-Based First Aid Kit, guides participants through a data-driven approach to selecting, organizing, and maintaining first aid essentials for outdoor expeditions. Drawing upon the latest research and consensus guidelines in wilderness medicine, we will review the medical literature identifying the highest-yield items to include based on the duration, remoteness, and type of trip—from single-day hikes to multi-week expeditions.

Sample first aid items from various manufacturers will be available for participants to handle, manipulate, and compare, enhancing familiarity with field-grade materials and tools.

Practical considerations for medication storage will be emphasized, including temperature management, packaging strategies to reduce bulk, and maintaining sterility and shelf life under variable environmental conditions. The session will blend short evidence reviews with interactive demonstrations and small-group discussions, empowering attendees to tailor their kits to specific environments, activities, and participant health needs. The session will also cover must-have medications for treating both common and critical wilderness ailments.

By the end of the workshop, attendees will leave with a customizable checklist and a clear understanding of key concepts to assemble a first aid kit that is not only portable and practical but also firmly rooted in the best available evidence of wilderness medicine practice.

Joint Reduction and Taping in a Wilderness Environment

Joint dislocations are a common high-impact injuries encountered during expeditions and outdoor travel, particularly involving the shoulder, patella, and fingers. In remote settings, the decision to attempt a reduction or to prioritize immobilization and evacuation must balance patient safety, pain control, clinician competence, environmental constraints, and the realities of delayed transport.

This workshop provides an evidence-based update on prehospital joint reduction in austere and wilderness environments. Participants will review the current scientific literature and clinical considerations guiding field management of dislocations, including patient selection, risk stratification, neurovascular assessment, and documentation of preand post-reduction status. Practical discussion will focus on the most appropriate reduction techniques for common wilderness presentations, emphasizing methods that are safe, reproducible, and feasible when resources are limited. A key component of the session will address “red flags” that should shift management away from reduction attempts and toward urgent evacuation.

Finally, participants will be introduced to expedition-oriented taping and support strategies adapted from sports medicine practice. Using minimal equipment, attendees will learn practical approaches to protect the injured joint, reduce re-dislocation risk, and improve functional tolerance for movement when continuation of the expedition is appropriate. The workshop emphasizes realistic decision-making, and techniques that can immediately translate to the field.

5 Rad Things You Can Do with POCUS in the Backcountry

Description:

Point of care ultrasound (pocus) is increasingly portable and practical for use in austere and wilderness environments, where diagnostic uncertainty, prolonged evacuation times, and limited analgesic options complicate care. Sparing the needed eFAST exam, this workshop will review five-ish high-yield ultrasound guided skills that can significantly improve diagnosis and pain control in the backcountry.

I’ll review 1- ultrasound diagnosis of pneumothorax and discussion of needle thoracostomy, 2- intercostal nerve blocks on rib fractures, 3- popliteal sciatic and saphenous nerve blocks for ankle fractures, 4- suprascapular nerve block and acromioclavicular joint infiltration for shoulder injuries, and 5- hematoma blocks for distal radius and clavicle fractures.

Using realistic wilderness case vignettes, including mountaineering, train running, kayaking, and ski touring, participants will review relevant anatomy including neighboring structures, including xrays for bony reference.

This workshop will also address practical considerations unique to expedition medicine including probe selection, medication choice, syringe/volume selection, and strategies to reduce complications. Discussion will include decision making, safety, and procedural feasibility in cold, wet, hot, and logistically constained environments. This will help the attendee to manage life threatening and painful injuries when definitive care is far away.

The Impact of Hypowraps on CPR Quality

Description: Hypothermic patients present a unique dual challenge in the wilderness setting: they must be simultaneously re-warmed and resuscitated; two goals that can directly compete with one another. This workshop examines the tension between packaging a patient for thermal protection and delivering effective, high-quality resuscitation in remote environments. Participants will engage with current field research, explore real-world co-morbidity scenarios, and develop adaptable resuscitation strategies for patients in hypowraps.

Summarize current field literature on hypothermia treatment, including emerging experimental data on CPR quality in hypowrapped patients.
Explain the principles of hypowrap construction and the physiological resuscitation needs of a hypothermic patient.
Identify and describe common co-morbidities associated with hypothermia; including drowning, traumatic injury, and snow immersion asphyxia ; and articulate how these conditions complicate patient care.
Compare and evaluate multiple resuscitation strategies for patients packaged in hypowraps, weighing trade-offs between thermal protection and intervention quality.

The CAWM Wilderness Medicine Race is a team trail race traveled on foot. Teams of 3-4 will begin at the trailhead and encounter various wilderness medicine scenarios, challenges, and questions along the course of the race.
