Medical Learners Interest Group

The CAWM Medical Learner Interest Group aims to foster a national community of medical learners interested in wilderness medicine. We aim to create an inclusive and interdisciplinary group that is passionate about growing access to the outdoors and our ability to manage emergencies in austere environments. We strive to ensure that the next generation of wilderness medicine professionals is well equipped to navigate the challenges of all outdoor activities.

Members must be active members of CAWM. The Medical Learner Interest Group operates under the guidance of the CAWM Board of Directors.

Sean Harrop

Medical Student, University of Alberta (Class of 2028)
Sean Harrop is a medical student at the University of Alberta who is happiest on skis, on a bike, or anywhere above valley fog. Having grown up in the outdoors, he recognizes that outdoor spaces are often challenging to enter, and his goal is to bring medical learners together to build connections and explore opportunities within the broader wilderness medicine community. With a background in kinesiology, ski patrolling, and wilderness first aid instruction, his interests lie at the intersection of adventure, extreme sport, and medicine. When he’s not in hospital, he’s usually chasing snow, elevation, or the next excuse to be outside.

Hayden John

Medical Student, Queen's University (Class of 2028)

Hayden John is a medical student at Queen’s University who is passionate about wilderness and prehospital medicine. Growing up in Central Ontario, Hayden has always been up for camping, hiking, skiing, and finding any excuse to be outside, especially if he can bring his dogs along.

Hayden’s interests at CAWM and beyond lie in integrating simulation, education, and research to show more people how impactful wilderness medicine can be.
