Helicopters are not always readily available to evacuate the sick or injured from the backcountry. Frequently, backcountry group member or ground SAR teams must transport patients to medical care. This workshop will demonstrate various improvised patient packaging and transporting devices. Participants will learn the basic principles of constructing an improvised litter. Various litters will be constructed, and workshop participants will the carry simulated patients over short distances. During the carrying practice participants will learn how to work as a “litter team” and how to maneuver around obstacles in nontechnical terrain. This practical and hands-on workshop will encourage participants to share their experience in building various litters and evaluate the pros and cons of the devices. This workshop will be very hands on and practical. Participants will assemble various improvised litters and practice carrying patients. Everyone should come prepared to be outside for the workshop and carry fellow participants over short distances in nontechnical terrain.
