CAWM2024 Committee


The Conference Planning Committee is responsible for the organization and communication surrounding the CAWM2024 conference on November 1-3, 2024 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

This 5th annual CAWM conference will be hybrid format (in-person and virtual) with pre-conference courses, lectures, social activities, a keynote speaker, workshops, and more! All wilderness medical professionals and learners are welcome including paramedics, nurses, SAR personnel, military, guides, ski patrollers, first responders, academics, and physicians.

We are excited to meet you in person, make connections, and learn together while advancing Wilderness Medicine in Canada!

Kendra Young - Committee Chair

MD, FRCPC-EM, (DiMM and FAWM Candidate)

Kendra is an FRCPC Emergency Medicine physician in Calgary and a Clinical Instructor with the University of Calgary.

She is currently completing her DiMM and FAWM certifications in addition to her Master of Education in Health Sciences Education. Kendra is passionate about knowledge dissemination and has been involved with the CAWM conferences since 2021. She was the co-chair for the CAWM2023 conference and is the co-chair for the upcoming CAWM2024 conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Kendra gets stoked on all things outdoors with a special love for climbing and ski touring.


Don McPhalen - Committee Vice-Chair


Don is the Medical Director for Kananaskis Mountain Rescue, the Alberta Parks professional mountain rescue team. He is also a member of the Canadian Mountain Parks Backcountry Medical Council. Don represents KMR on the Medical Commission of the International Commission for Alpine Rescue (ICAR MEDCOM). He is a practitioner member of the Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA) and holds an Operations level 1 certification. Don and his 6-year-old Lab, Java are a validated team with the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association (CARDA). He continues to be the most “junior” member of the KMR avalanche forecasting team!
